The importance of being insured
Filed in Posts That Pay The Bills
I hear that there used to be a time when insurance was a matter of personal responsibility and not required by law. Now, don’t hit me with a nerf bat for this opinion, but I feel that this is a load of old cobblers.
I think that issues such as whether to wear a seatbelt or a helmet are a matter for personal responsibility, since the person most likely to be hurt, brain-dead, etc. is you. When you’re wielding a motorcycle, an RV or a van, though, you’ve got a very high potential for killing someone else, and insurance is a must. Too many people seem to think that driving is a right. It’s not. It’s a privilege that comes loaded with huge responsibility. So now you know what I think about insurance.
In the UK, I don’t recall a time when insurance was not a must as stipulated by law. Part of buying my first bike was signing up with an insurer. These days it’s a little easier when you have sites such as Quote Zone to set you up with van insurance and what-not. They look through regular insurers and brokers to find you a better deal. The service is free and independent, i.e. you’re not forced into one set of offerings. Just plug in your details and up to fifteen different offers come back. There are lots of different kinds of insurance from pet insurance to RV (caravan) insurance.
I gave it a shot and it’s very easy. Just pick the type you want–of course, I headed straight for motorcycle insurance–and you’re set to fill in your details and get a quote back.
So there you go. A resource for getting quotes of all sorts, especially in the United Kingdom. It sure would have been interesting to see that kind of thing when I was riding Katie, my Virago 535, but that was long before the days of internet insurance. This is one of those cases where the internet age can really make a huge difference!
